History of the Sierra Foothills Rose Society

Organized June, 1962
Written by Muriel Humenick, founding member

Muriel & Bill Humenick were the founders of Sierra Foothills Rose Society. The Charter was received at the Fall District Conference sponsored by the Peninsula Rose Society. While living in Orangevale and assiting at the Sacramento Rose Show in the Spring of 1962, they offered a garden tour to the late Clay and Lucia Morgan who were judging the show. The Morgans noticed that the garden was going to be in full bloom too late for the Spring shows and suggested a new society be formed with a Fall show date. The Morgans offered to send a copy of the by-laws of the Peninsula Rose Society which they had founded.

The first few meetings were held in their home; Ken Buchanan , a veteran rosarian was there and is a charter member. The members organized and elected officers. Bill was the first President and Muriel served as Secretary, Treasurer, Editor and whatever else needed doing. The first Rose Show was held in conjunction with The Roseville Garden Club. Sierra Foothills Rose Society was the first Society to have a fall show (in our NCNH District) We introduced the monthly LITTLE ROSE SHOW so members could gain experience and confidence. As a society we planted a Rose Garden at the Sierra View Country Club where we were meeting.

We currently meet at the Citrus Heights City Complex: Kroeger Hall, 6237 Fountain Square Drive, Citrus Heights, CA. 95621
