History of the Golden Sierra Rose Society

Organized 2002
Written by Rosemary Sawyer

Ron and Rosemary Sawyer moved to Columbia in 1998. They were members of Mother Lode Rose Society in Jackson, Central Valley Rose Society in Stockton, and Lodi-Woodbridge Rose Society in Lodi - all at least an hour away (one way). Therefore, they decided to establish a local rose society, incorporating Calaveras and Tuolumne Counties.

In early October of 2002, they began placing publicity pieces in the local newspaper and contacting people interested in growing roses. The first meeting, October 13, 2003, was held in their home, with 16 people present where it was agreed to establish a rose society affiliated with ARS.It was decided to meet the first Sunday of each month (except July and August)at 1:30 p.m.Discussion followed about where to meet and it was decided to check with the State Park to see if we could meet in one of their buildings. (We now have an agreement to meet at Eagle Cottage near the Fallon House Theatre, in exchange for helping bring the park's roses back to their original beauty.)
