History of the Mendocino Rose Society

Organized 1999
Written by Pam Temple

The Mendocino Society was formed on December 2, 1999, largely due to the efforts of Wendy Cram. Wendy has been growing roses at her Ukiah home since 1979. In 1999 she had been a member for three years of the Redwood Empire Rose Society, but had not been able to attend a single meeting as they were too far away. She felt the time had come for Mendocino and Lake Counties to have their own local rose organization. When Duane Calrson, Membership Director from Sacramento called to ask if there was interest in forming a local society, Wendy began to put her plan into action. With the help of Noreen Carnahan, Aline Anderson, and Herb Thompson, Treasurer, she started the process of contacting people and dealing with the many details that go into setting up a new organization. On December 2 the group convened for the first time and the meeting place was filled to capacity, much to the joy of those who had worked so hard.

The MRS has been meeting since then on the second Tuesday of each month at 630 PM. They enjoy listening to fine speakers on a variety of subjects. The programs are usually planned to be pertinent to the season. There are also a number of tours enjoyed by members.
